very hard to teach my pet the exact way to pet me; however, she never seems to
get it and keeps trying to pick me up instead.

“Dear No Pets,
You have to remember the mentality of pets. Because they seem to think they know best, you must work in that manner. Try not purring until she pets you as you wish. For the picking up, try crying and struggling with claws out, that will usually clue them to the fact that they are doing it wrong. Good luck.
